Bientôt la fête des pères
Father's Day falls on June 19th this year. This holiday, now firmly rooted in our customs but whose origins remain little known, pays tribute to the one who gave us life, our dear and loving father. And if you're lacking gift ideas, today, Agnès de Verneuil offers you an original one for a dad who will impress!

Father's Day, a relatively recent tradition

Although fathers have been honored since the Middle Ages in Catholic countries through the celebration of Saint Joseph, the father of Jesus, the tradition only really appeared in the 20th century in the United States. This holiday was established on June 19, 1910, by a schoolteacher wishing to pay tribute to her father, a remarkable man who raised his six children alone. In 1972, President Richard Nixon democratized Father's Day and made it a national celebration. He later made the holiday a national holiday, although it is no longer a national holiday. In France, we owe Father's Day to a lighter manufacturer. Indeed, it was in 1949 that the Flaminaire company came up with the idea of creating this holiday for purely commercial reasons, allowing it to sell its lighters to a large number of gentlemen. This day was later made official by decree in 1952, and celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

Father's Day around the world

Whether it's an old tradition or a new one, Father's Day is still celebrated in many countries around the world. For example, in Switzerland, celebrating dads is a relatively new phenomenon. It wasn't until 2007 that Father's Day was introduced in a more symbolic way: it primarily emphasizes the father's encouragement and commitment to his children. In Thailand, Father's Day is celebrated on the King's birthday. Thais offer large orange-red flowers called Canna flowers to their father or grandfather, plants considered masculine. They also wear yellow clothes on this day to pay homage to the King. If you've been hesitant about giving flowers to your dad, this Thai tradition may change your mind! In Hindu countries, such as India or Nepal, fathers are celebrated on the day of the new moon, that is, at the end of August or the beginning of September. In most of the rest of the world, Father's Day is celebrated as it is in France, on the third Sunday in June.

A jewel for his dad

Even if rings and bracelets are becoming increasingly popular among men, not everyone has yet taken the plunge. Cufflinks , for their part, remain a sure value in men's jewelry, whether for the trendiest or most classic dads! These pieces, which appeared in the 17th century, were used to replace ribbons or lace closing the cuff on the sleeve. Democratized thereafter, their refinement remains above all a way to dress up an elegant outfit, whether for a special occasion or every day. Agnès de Verneuil offers cufflinks inspired by the sculpted screens used in oriental architecture in her Permanent Collection . A precious and timeless gift for your dad, a reflection of the love you have for him! Photo credit: ebaumsworld
