Father's Day, a relatively recent tradition
Although fathers have been honored since the Middle Ages in Catholic countries through the celebration of Saint Joseph, the father of Jesus, the tradition only really appeared in the 20th century in the United States. This holiday was established on June 19, 1910, by a schoolteacher wishing to pay tribute to her father, a remarkable man who raised his six children alone. In 1972, President Richard Nixon democratized Father's Day and made it a national celebration. He later made the holiday a national holiday, although it is no longer a national holiday.
In France, we owe Father's Day to a lighter manufacturer. Indeed, it was in 1949 that the Flaminaire company came up with the idea of creating this holiday for purely commercial reasons, allowing it to sell its lighters to a large number of gentlemen. This day was later made official by decree in 1952, and celebrated on the
third Sunday of June.
Father's Day around the world
Whether it's an old tradition or a new one, Father's Day is still celebrated in many countries around the world. For example, in Switzerland, celebrating dads is a relatively new phenomenon. It wasn't until 2007 that Father's Day was introduced in a more symbolic way: it primarily emphasizes the father's encouragement and commitment to his children.
In Thailand, Father's Day is celebrated on the King's birthday. Thais offer large orange-red flowers called Canna flowers to their father or grandfather, plants considered masculine. In Hindu countries, such as India or Nepal, fathers are celebrated on the day of the new moon, that is, at the end of August or the beginning of September.
